Hackensack police who wondered what a driver from Texas was doing parked on a local street with his motor running found him carrying a .38 Special, authorities said.

Bryan Kyckelhan, 40, of Houston, told the narcotics detectives Friday afternoon that he was “just passing time” sitting alone in his 2013 Prius on Van Wettering Place, Capt. Peter Busciglio said.

He also said he’d been staying in several places in New Jersey since last month, including a residence nearby, Busciglio said.

“While speaking to him one of the detectives observed what appeared to be a black handgun case on the passenger side floor panel,” the captain said. “He alerted the other detectives.”

Questioned by police, Kyckelhan admitted he had a gun in the car – and was ordered out immediately, Busciglio said.

Officers found and secured the silver revolver, which held five rounds, he said.

The driver “advised the detectives that he did not have a valid firearms ID in his possession but stated that he did own the gun legally.”

Kyckelhan, who had no previous criminal history, was processed on an illegal possession charge and sent to the Bergen County Jail. A judge the next day ordered him release, under New Jersey’s 2017 bail reform law.
